Buying Guide

How to Choose a Shrink Wrapping Machine: The Full Guide

A shrink wrapping machine wraps a product or multipack in film, seals it, then passes it through a heated tunnel that shrinks the film tight around the package. Here is how to choose the right configuration.

What Shrink Wrapping Does — and Why Retailers Expect It

A shrink wrapping machine wraps a product (or multipack) in film, seals it, then passes it through a heated tunnel that shrinks the film tight around the package. The result is a tamper-evident, dust-proof, retail-ready package that protects the product and, for multipacks, keeps units together through transport and display.

Shrink wrapping is one of the lowest-cost ways to make a product look professionally packaged — which is why it is standard for beverage multipacks, cosmetics, books, hardware kits and gift sets. SunAura’s range covers both halves of the process: L-bar sealers (FM5540A, FQL380, FQL450LB, FQL450T) that cut and seal the film envelope, shrink tunnels (BSD400/450 series) that apply the heat, complete systems (FQL450A+BSD4020A, BSE5045B) and the ASS450-AI combo that integrates sealer and tunnel in one unit.

Separate Sealer + Tunnel, or One Combined System?

Separate units (an L-bar sealer plus a tunnel) are more flexible and easier to maintain: each unit is individually serviceable, and you can size the tunnel to future products. Choose this when your products vary in size or you expect to upgrade throughput later.

Combined systems like the BSE5045B (ST6040Q sealer + BSE5045 tunnel) or the ASS450-AI combo save floor space and one transfer point — choose this when the product range is stable and you want one supplier, one footprint, one control philosophy. The practical difference is small on output; the real tradeoff is flexibility vs simplicity.

Choosing Shrink Film: POF, PVC or PE

POF (polyolefin) is the modern default: strong, clear, FDA food-contact safe, shrinks at moderate temperatures, no odor. Use it for food, cosmetics and general retail. PVC is cheaper and shrinks at low temperature but yellows with age and has disposal concerns — fine for non-food industrial products where cost dominates. PE (polyethylene) is thicker and tougher, shrinks at higher temperatures (160–200°C), and suits heavy multipacks and industrial parts — it needs a higher-power tunnel like the BSD450B (8 kW) to hold temperature under continuous heavy loads. All SunAura sealers accept all three film types; the tunnel power is what must match the film.

Matching the Machine to Your Product

1. Package footprint → seal size. The L-bar seal size defines your max product. FM5540 handles 550×400 mm (FM7060 option: 700×600 mm); FQL450A seals 600×450 mm; the BSE5045B’s ST6040Q seals 600×400 mm. Measure the largest product or multipack you will wrap, then add 10% margin.

2. Tunnel size and load → throughput. The BSD4020A tunnel (1000×400×200 mm, 5 kg load) covers medium retail products; the BSE5045 tunnel (1500×500×450 mm) handles large multipacks; the BSD450B (8 kW, 10 kg load) is for heavy and PE-film work. When a heavy product enters the tunnel, temperature drops 5–15°C — the 8 kW unit recovers that in 3–5 seconds, keeping shrink quality consistent on a busy line.

3. Speed expectations. L-bar systems are operator-fed and typically run 8–15 packages/min. If you need 30+ packages/min with bottles or cans, you are looking at a fully automatic sleeve wrapper — tell us your target speed and we will specify the right configuration.

4. Energy. Tunnels are the main energy user. An 8 kW BSD450B averages 4–5 kW during continuous operation; insulated double-wall housings are standard on all SunAura tunnels. If your facility is power-limited, we configure 380V three-phase to balance the load.

Film Cost per Pack — the Number That Quietly Adds Up

Shrink film is usually the biggest running cost of a shrink line, and it is where L-bar efficiency shows: an L-bar sealer cuts and seals in one operation with minimal film waste, and correct film-width selection avoids trim waste entirely. As a planning figure, a typical retail pack uses 0.6–1.2 m² of film depending on package size; ask us for a film consumption estimate on your actual product before budgeting. The PID temperature controller (±2°C) on SunAura tunnels also matters here — stable temperature means fewer rejects and less re-wrapping, the hidden cost most buyers underestimate.

Integration and Maintenance Notes

Shrink systems sit naturally after filling/labeling and before cartoning or palletizing. Combined with our liquid filling machines, a typical bottle line runs filling → capping → labeling → shrink multipacking → carton packing. Maintenance is simple: keep sealing bars clean of residue, check the tunnel conveyor belt tracking weekly, and use the correct film width to avoid trimming waste. Every SunAura system ships with a film-width and temperature setup chart for your three most common package sizes, so first-day tuning takes minutes, not hours.

01

Seal Size

Measure your largest pack + 10% margin: 550×400, 600×450 or 700×600 mm seals available.

02

Tunnel & Load

5 kg standard, 10 kg with the 8 kW BSD450B — size the tunnel to your heaviest product.

03

Film Type

POF for food & retail, PVC for cost-driven industrial, PE for heavy multipacks (higher tunnel power).

04

Speed

8–15 packages/min on L-bar systems; 30+ packages/min needs an automatic sleeve wrapper — tell us your target.

05

Energy

Tunnels average 4–5 kW continuous. 380V three-phase config available for power-limited facilities.

Five Mistakes That Cost Buyers Time and Money

  • Undersizing the tunnel — A 5 kg tunnel on a heavy multipack line drops temperature on every pack and shrink quality suffers. Size to your heaviest product.
  • Using PE film on a low-power tunnel — PE needs 160–200°C sustained. The BSD450B’s 8 kW recovers temperature in 3–5 s; smaller tunnels cannot hold it.
  • Ignoring film trim waste — Wrong film width = trimming waste on every pack. Correct width selection eliminates it.
  • Judging by rated power — Tunnels cycle elements on/off; an 8 kW unit averages 4–5 kW continuous. Plan power on the average, not the rating.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between POF, PVC and PE shrink film?

POF is the modern default — clear, strong, food-contact safe. PVC is cheaper but yellows and has disposal concerns. PE is thicker and tougher, needs higher shrink temperatures (160–200°C) and a higher-power tunnel.

Do I need a separate sealer and tunnel, or a combined system?

Separate units give flexibility and easier maintenance; combined systems (BSE5045B, ASS450-AI) save floor space and simplify operation. Both deliver the same retail-ready result.

Does the shrink tunnel need a separate sealing machine?

Yes, a tunnel only shrinks. Pair it with an L-bar sealer (FQL450A, FM5540A) or choose a combined system that includes both.

What is the maximum product weight?

Standard tunnels carry up to 5 kg (BSD400); the BSD450B doubles that to 10 kg with an 8 kW heater for heavy multipacks and PE film.

How do I choose the seal size?

Measure your largest product or multipack and add ~10% margin, then match to the sealer: 550×400 mm (FM5540), 600×450 mm (FQL450A), 700×600 mm (FM7060).

What is the power consumption?

Tunnels average 4–5 kW in continuous operation even when rated higher (elements cycle on/off at set temperature). Insulated double-wall housings are standard.

Can the system be customized?

Yes — seal size, tunnel dimensions, voltage, conveyor speed and film type are configurable. Send samples for a remote test.

What is the lead time and warranty?

Standard systems 15–20 business days, custom 25–40 days; 12-month warranty, lifetime remote support, spare parts within 48 hours.
