Buying Guide

How to Choose a Bottle Labeling Machine

The labeler is the last machine that touches the product before the case packer. Get it wrong and the label tears, skews, or lands on the wrong panel — and the line stops. Get it right and the label becomes your most visible brand asset.

Where the Labeler Sits in a Front-End Line

In a typical bottle line, the sequence is: filler → capper → labeler → induction sealer (if foil-lidded) → date coder → case packer. The labeler needs a stable, positively driven conveyor — not a gravity slide — because skewing at the in-feed is the single biggest cause of mislabeled bottles. We integrate the labeler with our filler and capper as one line, so the conveyor speed, bottle handling and reject logic are matched from day one rather than bolted together on site.

Five Labeling Methods — Pick the One That Matches Your Label Stock

Wrap-around labeling is the workhorse for round bottles. A single label wraps 270–360° around the cylinder, applied by a servo-driven roller while the bottle spins on a vacuum or belt pad. It is the standard for edible oil, sauces, beverages and pharmaceuticals in round PET or glass. SunAura's round-and-square labeler uses this method with a top press stabilizer for tall or unstable containers.

Pressure-sensitive labeling applies a pre-glued label from a die-cut roll onto flat or slightly curved surfaces — the front and back panels of square bottles, the shoulder of a jar, or a top panel on a tub. It is the most flexible method for cosmetics and personal care, where front-and-back panel labels on square or oval shapes dominate. No adhesive mess, no warm-up, fast changeover to a new label roll.

Shrink sleeve labeling applies a plastic sleeve that is then shrunk by a steam or heat tunnel. It is the premium choice for 360° decoration on shaped containers, tamper-evident bands on caps, and beverage multipacks. It adds a tunnel station and a sleeve former — higher capital, but the label covers the whole bottle and survives refrigeration and condensation.

Hot-melt glue labeling uses a heated adhesive applied in a pattern to the paper label, which is then wrapped around the bottle. It is the traditional choice for high-volume glass beverage and beer lines where roll-fed paper labels are cheaper than pressure-sensitive die-cut labels at 300+ BPM. It requires glue-melt maintenance and a warm-up period.

Cold-glue labeling uses water-based glue, typically for wet-glue paper labels on glass jars and bottles in food and preserves. It is slower than hot-melt but gives a crisp, archival paper look for premium products.

Round vs Square Bottle Changeover

If your line runs both round and square bottles, you need a labeler that handles both without a mechanical rebuild. SunAura's round-and-square labeler switches format in under 30 minutes: the top press stabilizer lifts for round bottles and engages for square bottles, the wrap-around roller swaps to a pressure-sensitive applicator head for square panels, and the recipe is stored on the touchscreen. Specify this at quoting — retrofitting a round-only labeler to run square bottles is not practical.

Label Materials and Speed

Pressure-sensitive labels run on die-cut rolls: paper, PET, PVC or PP film. Wrap-around labels run on fanfold or roll stock. Shrink sleeves run on PETG or OPS film. The applicator head and peel plate must match the label thickness and liner — a 60 μm PET label needs a different peel angle than a 80 μm paper label. Our engineers size the head to your actual label stock; send a sample roll before ordering so we can run it on a test unit.

Five Numbers to Prepare Before You Quote

1. Bottle range: smallest and largest diameter (round) or panel dimensions (square). 2. Label type: wrap-around, pressure-sensitive front/back, shrink sleeve, hot-melt or cold-glue. 3. Speed target: bottles per minute, not per hour — the labeler must match the filler, not the other way around. 4. Label stock: material, thickness, roll or fanfold, liner. 5. Integration: will it sit after our capper on our conveyor, and do you need a reject station for mislabeled bottles?

01

Bottle Geometry

Round cylinders use wrap-around. Square/flat panels use pressure-sensitive front-back. Shaped containers often need shrink sleeve.

02

Label Stock

Die-cut pressure-sensitive roll, fanfold wrap-around, shrink sleeve film, or paper roll for hot/cold glue.

03

Line Speed

Match the labeler to the filler. 60 BPM round wrap-around is standard; 300+ BPM needs hot-melt or a high-speed sleeve tunnel.

04

Changeover

Round-only is fast; round+square needs a top press stabilizer and a stored recipe. Plan 30-minute changeovers for multi-SKU lines.

05

Reject Logic

Vision inspection at the outfeed flags missing, skewed or bar-code-unreadable labels. Budget for a reject diverter.

Five Mistakes That Cost Buyers Time and Money

  • Buying a round-only labeler for a square-bottle product — the wrap-around roller cannot seat on a flat panel; you need a pressure-sensitive head.
  • Mismatching labeler speed to the filler — if your filler runs 120 BPM, a 60 BPM labeler becomes the bottleneck. Match or exceed the filler.
  • Ignoring the in-feed conveyor — a skewed bottle at the applicator is a mislabeled bottle. Budget for a positively driven, synchronized conveyor.
  • Specifying label stock late — the peel plate and applicator head are tuned to the label thickness and liner. Send samples before quoting.
  • Skipping the reject station — without vision reject, mislabeled bottles ship and your QA catches them in the warehouse. Add a diverter.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between wrap-around and pressure-sensitive labeling?

Wrap-around wraps a single label around a round cylinder — best for round bottles in edible oil, sauce and pharma. Pressure-sensitive applies die-cut labels to flat or slightly curved panels — best for square bottles in cosmetics and personal care. If you run both, buy a labeler with both heads and a stored recipe.

How accurate is label placement?

±1.0–1.5% of label height depending on method and label stock. Pressure-sensitive holds the tighter end (±1.0%) on flat panels; wrap-around on round bottles typically lands at ±1.0–1.5%. Vision inspection at the outfeed rejects skewed or missing labels.

Can one labeler handle both round and square bottles?

Yes — our round-and-square labeler uses a top press stabilizer for round bottles and switches to a pressure-sensitive applicator head for square panels. Changeover is under 30 minutes, with the recipe stored on the touchscreen. Specify this at quoting.

What label materials can you run?

Pressure-sensitive die-cut rolls in paper, PET, PVC and PP film; fanfold or roll wrap-around labels; PETG/OPS shrink sleeves; roll-fed paper for hot-melt or cold-glue applications. Send a sample roll before ordering so we can run it on a test unit and confirm peel-plate tuning.

How does the labeler integrate with my filler and capper?

We build the filler, capper and labeler as one line with a synchronized conveyor. The labeler speed matches or exceeds the filler; the in-feed is positively driven to prevent skewing; a reject diverter removes mislabeled bottles before case packing. Reference: our edible oil filling-capping-labeling line for Mid-East bottlers.

What about CIP and cleaning?

Product-contact parts (conveyor, bottle handling, applicator frame in contact zones) are 304 stainless steel with quick-release design. CIP options are available for food and pharma lines. Specify your cleaning regime at quoting so the machine is built with the right manifold and valve design.

Do you supply shrink sleeve and hot-melt systems?

We supply wrap-around and pressure-sensitive labelers as standard. Shrink sleeve tunnels and hot-melt glue units are integrated on a project basis for high-speed beverage and beer lines — quoted per line configuration. Tell us your target speed and container at the inquiry stage.

What is the lead time and warranty?

Standalone labelers 20–25 business days. Integrated filling-capping-labeling lines 25–40 days. 12-month warranty, lifetime remote support, spare parts dispatched within 48 hours from our Qingdao warehouse.
