SunAura Ships a Chamber Vacuum Packaging Line to a Vietnamese Cashew Processor: Why Chamber Vacuum Beat Continuous Belt and Thermoforming for 1kg Vacuum Pouches

A cashew exporter in Binh Duong, Vietnam, approached us last quarter with a familiar problem: they were hand-packing 1kg vacuum pouches of roasted cashews on a bench-top chamber sealer, and they could not keep up with the US and EU buyers asking for 20-foot containers a month. Their question was simple — do we buy a bigger bench sealer, a continuous belt vacuum machine, or a thermoforming line? After walking their actual product mix, speed target, and budget, we specified a double-chamber automatic vacuum machine with gas flush and integrated nitrogen mixing. Here is why.

The Client’s Actual Constraints

The client runs a roasted-cashew processing plant with three roast lines, a cooling belt, and a packaging hall that was doing everything manually. They package:

  • 1kg vacuum pouches of roasted whole cashews for retail (about 60% of volume)
  • 500g vacuum pouches of broken cashews for food-service (about 25%)
  • 5kg foil bags of cashew pieces for industrial ingredient customers (about 15%)

Target output: around 1,200–1,500 1kg pouches per hour. They already buy laminated PET/PE pouches from a local converter, and they had no intention of switching to rollstock film — they wanted to keep using pre-made pouches, because their customers had already approved the pouch artwork and barcode layout.

The Three Options We Compared

Three technologies were on the table. We built a side-by-side comparison before recommending one.

Why We Did Not Specify Thermoforming

Thermoforming is the throughput king — it can stamp out 30–60 packs a minute from rollstock film — but it forces you into a single pouch format. The client runs three pouch sizes and wants to keep their pre-made pouch artwork. Switching to rollstock would mean a new package approval cycle with every retail buyer in the US and EU. At their target of 1,500 pouches per hour, thermoforming would give them surplus throughput they did not need, at 5–10x the machine cost. The payback would never close.

Why We Did Not Specify a Continuous Belt Vacuum Machine

A continuous belt vacuum machine (the kind that drags pouches through a vacuum chamber on a conveyor) can run 15–20 pouches per minute, but it is a long machine and it is fussy about pouch flatness. Cashews are a dry, granular product that settles unevenly in a pouch; a belt machine expects pouches to lay flat and predictable. At the client’s mix of 1kg, 500g, and 5kg bags, the belt changeover would eat into running time. A belt machine also costs about 3–4x a double-chamber machine. We would only recommend this if the client was pushing past 2,500 pouches per hour on a single format.

Why the Double-Chamber Was the Right Call

A double-chamber vacuum machine looks modest, but it is the workhorse of the nut and dried-fruit industry. While one chamber is vacuum-sealing, the operator loads the other chamber with the next batch of pouches. The chambers alternate, so you get near-continuous throughput without the complexity of a belt or thermoformer. At about 5–6 cycles per minute with two chambers, the client gets roughly 10–12 pouches per minute — that is 600–720 pouches per hour per chamber pair, and with two operators working two machines, they hit the 1,200–1,500 target they needed.

We specified the unit with a nitrogen gas-flush attachment, because roasted cashews go rancid in a few weeks if packed in plain vacuum. A 70/30 N2/CO2 blend (or pure N2 for retail pouches) doubles shelf life and prevents the oil in the nuts from oxidizing. We also added an integrated gas mixer so the ratio is repeatable, not set by a guess.

What the Client Got

The line we shipped includes:

  • Two double-chamber vacuum sealing machines, each with a 1000 x 1100 mm chamber
  • Integrated N2 gas-flush with digital mixer
  • Vacuum pump sized for continuous duty (oil-lubricated rotary vane, 63 m³/h)
  • Stainless-steel 304 body, washdown exterior
  • Seal bar length 10 mm, adjustable for 500g to 5kg bags

The client can now run two operators per shift, produce roughly 3,000–3,500 kg of finished cashews per eight-hour shift, and keep the existing pouch artwork. Total line investment was a fraction of a thermoforming line, and payback came in under 18 months based on reduced labor and fewer customer rejections.

When You Should Not Buy a Double-Chamber Vacuum Machine

The double-chamber is not right for everyone. If your product is a wet or liquid product (meat, marinated items, soup), you need a deep-chamber or tilt-station machine to stop liquid being sucked into the pump. If you are running more than 2,000 pouches per hour on one format, step up to a continuous belt. If you want full 360-degree printed packages with formed shapes, go thermoforming. If you only do 100 pouches a day, a bench-top chamber unit is all you need — do not over-buy.

FAQ: Vacuum Packaging for Nuts and Dried Fruit

Do roasted cashews need gas flush, or is plain vacuum enough?

For dry nuts and dried fruit, PET/PE laminated pouches are fine and cheaper. For wet, marinated, or long-shelf-life products, use nylon/PE which has better oxygen barrier.

SunAura’s Vacuum Packaging Capability

SunAura Machinery supplies bench-top, double-chamber, continuous belt, and thermoforming vacuum packaging lines for nut processors, dried-fruit packers, meat producers, and seafood exporters across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. We size the machine to your actual pouch format and throughput, not to a catalog spec. Tell us your product and target output, and we will propose the right vacuum solution — even if the right answer is a $2k bench sealer instead of a $100k line.

For a double-chamber running 5–6 cycles/min, a 40–63 m³/h rotary vane pump is the sweet spot. Under-sizing the pump is the most common mistake — it shows up as slow cycles and hot oil.
