What a Pillow Packaging Machine Is — and the Products It Wraps

A pillow packaging machine (also called a flow wrap machine or horizontal form-fill-seal machine) wraps products in a continuous tube of film, forming the classic pillow-shaped pack with a fin seal on the bottom and crimped seals at both ends. It is the fastest and most economical way to wrap discrete items — bread and cakes, mooncakes, sausages, noodles, candy, soap, towels, hardware parts, instruction manuals — at speeds from 30 to 150 packs per minute.

Rotary Knife or Reciprocating Knife? This Choice Matters More Than Speed

Rotary knife cuts with a continuous rotary motion — fast and simple, but the contact time is short, so sealing quality is slightly lower and film compatibility is narrower. It cannot reliably cut pure aluminum film or paper film. Choose rotary for standard OPP/CPP films on medium-speed lines where film cost is low.

Reciprocating knife moves vertically with the product, giving longer contact time and greater cutting force. It handles pure aluminum film, aluminum-coated film and paper film — the right choice for high-barrier packaging, premium products and any film that is hard to cut cleanly. The YC600W’s reciprocating version is the model food factories choose for aluminum-laminated coffee, tea and pastry packaging where seal appearance and integrity are part of the brand.

Choosing the Right Machine: Product Size, Speed and Feeding

1. Product dimensions. YC420 wraps bags up to L500 × W160 × H50 mm; YC600W goes to L500 × W280 × H140 mm. Measure the largest product and add 5–10 mm clearance. Roll film width ranges 80–400 mm on the YC420 and 120–600 mm on the YC600W — this must cover your product plus seal allowance.

2. Speed. YC420 runs 30–120 packs/min; YC600W 30–150 packs/min, depending on product size and film. If you exceed 150 packs/min or need 24/7 continuous operation, we engineer multi-lane or high-speed configurations on request.

3. Feeding. A tail stock (infeed conveyor) aligns products automatically before they enter the film tube — required for sticky, soft or irregular items like cakes and sausages. The YC600W also integrates with automatic collating lines for fully hands-off feeding. Manual feeding is fine for low-volume specialty products but becomes the bottleneck above ~60 packs/min.

4. Film and color mark. All models support OPP, PVC, OPP/CPP, KOP/CPP and aluminum-coated films, with high-sensitivity electric-eye color mark tracking so print registration stays accurate. The YC600W’s dual paper-roll holder splices film automatically — no line stop at roll change.

5. Bag appearance. Add the corner-tucking device on end seals for a shaped, premium finish. Servo set-and-cut bag length means no empty-run adjustment — change bag length on the touchscreen and the machine recalculates instantly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Buying a rotary knife for a barrier-film product — aluminum and paper films will tear or seal poorly; spec the reciprocating knife up front. Under-sizing the film width — film barely wider than the product causes fin-seal leaks; our engineers verify film width in the sample test. Forgetting the feeding line — a fast machine is useless if products arrive by hand; budget for a tail stock or collating line in the same project. Ignoring operator training — our servo machines are designed so ordinary staff can learn operation from the touchscreen-guided interface in a day, but plan the training anyway.

Film and Cost per Pack

Flow wrap film is the main consumable; choose film width just above product plus seal allowance to avoid waste, and let the electric-eye registration trim print waste — mis-registered packs are the most common reject on non-servo machines. Servo set-and-cut also means no empty-run adjustment, so every meter of film becomes a pack. Most buyers plan 0.5–1.5 cents of film per pack at commodity OPP prices; high-barrier and printed films cost more but protect premium products. Ask for a film consumption estimate on your product at quote time.
