The automatic flap folding carton sealer operates through a combination of mechanical guide systems and sensor-triggered pneumatic or servo-driven folding mechanisms. When a carton with bottom flaps already sealed arrives at the infeed — either manually placed by an operator or automatically delivered from an upstream case erector or product loading station — photo-eye sensors detect the leading edge of the carton and signal the PLC to initiate the folding and sealing cycle.
As the carton is pulled forward by the dual side belt drive system, the first stage of flap folding occurs: two horizontal guide rails positioned at approximately 45-degree angles on either side of the conveyor path make contact with the minor (side) flaps and gradually fold them inward to a horizontal position. The guide rails are adjustable in both height and angle to accommodate different carton dimensions. As the carton continues forward, the second folding stage engages: a rotating folding arm — driven by either a pneumatic cylinder or a servo motor depending on the model — swings down and forward, making contact with the leading major (front) flap and folding it backward over the carton top. Simultaneously, a curved stationary guide plate positioned above the conveyor makes contact with the trailing major (rear) flap and folds it forward. The sequence ensures that the major flaps overlap correctly, with the front flap folded first and the rear flap folded on top, creating a clean, flat top surface.
Once all four flaps are folded, the carton enters the tape sealing station, where top and bottom tape cartridges apply BOPP tape across the seams using the same foam roller pressure and angled blade cutting principle as the semi-automatic sealer. For hot-melt glue models, a glue gun nozzle applies a bead of hot-melt adhesive to the flap overlap area just before the flaps are pressed together by a compression roller, creating a bond that is significantly stronger than tape. The entire folding and sealing process takes approximately 2-3 seconds per carton, and the machine automatically resets and waits for the next carton after each cycle. The PLC control system also includes fault detection — if a carton is misaligned or a flap fails to fold correctly, the machine pauses and triggers an alarm, preventing jams and damaged cartons.
