Bottled Water & Drum Palletizer

Bottled Water & Drum Palletizer

The SunAura bottled water & drum palletizer (SNA-BWP20) is purpose-built for the 5-gallon (18.9L) water jug and drum market. A mechanical clamp gripper lifts each filled jug from the conveyor and builds 4×4 or 3×3 pallet patterns at up to 600 jugs/hour. All product-contact parts are stainless steel, the cell runs on 380V 3-phase, and it integrates directly with bottling and case conveyors. CE-certified and factory-direct.

Product Description

The SunAura bottled water & drum palletizer is a dedicated end-of-line solution for the high-volume, hygiene-sensitive 5-gallon (18.9L) bottled water industry. A filled jug weighs roughly 19–20 kg — too heavy and awkward for repeated manual lifting — and must be placed gently so it does not crack, leak, or tip on the pallet. This cell uses a mechanical clamp EOAT that cradles the body of the jug from both sides, rather than a vacuum cup that would slip on a curved, wet surface.

Jugs arrive from the bottling line on a stainless-steel or food-grade conveyor, separated and stopped at the pick station. The clamp closes around the jug body, lifts it, rotates it as needed, and places it onto the wooden or plastic pallet in a programmed 4×4 or 3×3 pattern. The cell builds layer after layer to a stable shipping load, with a layer separator (cardboard or slip sheet) inserted between layers on request. All parts that touch the product — conveyor surfaces, guide rails and the clamp contact pads — are stainless steel or food-grade material to meet bottled-water hygiene expectations.

Rated throughput is up to 600 jugs per hour, running on a 380V 3-phase supply. The same clamping platform can be adapted to drums and jerry cans of similar size. Every unit undergoes a 48-hour continuous run test before shipment and ships CE certified. Send us your jug or drum dimensions and pallet size — our engineers will program and test the pattern before you order.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Mechanical clamp, not vacuum: A wet, curved 5-gallon jug body cannot be held reliably by suction cups. The opposing clamp pads cradle the jug body and grip firmly without crushing the handle or neck.
  • Up to 600 jugs/hour: Matches the output of standard 5-gallon bottling lines, keeping pace with filling and capping without building up jugs at the end of the line.
  • Stainless steel product contact parts: Conveyor surfaces, guides and clamp pads are stainless or food-grade material — easy to wash down and compliant with bottled-water hygiene standards.
  • Stable 4×4 / 3×3 patterns: Pre-programmed interlocking patterns keep tall jugs from leaning or shifting during storage and trucking, reducing breakage in transit.
  • Optional layer slip-sheet inserter: Cardboard or plastic sheets between layers stabilize the load and protect jug bottoms during stacking and warehouse handling.
  • Handles drums and jerry cans too: The clamping platform adapts to square or round drums and jerry cans of similar footprint, so one cell covers multiple beverage/chemical containers.
  • Integrates with bottling conveyors: Infeed height, belt width and direction are customized to your existing water-line output — left-to-right or right-to-left.

Application Industries

Bottled Water Plants

5-gallon bottled water production — the core application. Removes heavy, repetitive jug lifting and builds stable, shippable pallet loads.

Beverage Distributors

Warehouses and distributors handling large-format water and beverage jugs — fast, repeatable palletizing for delivery routes.

Water Refill Stations

High-volume refill and delivery operations — automates jug stacking so drivers can focus on logistics, not lifting.

Drums & Jerry Cans

20–25L drums and square jerry cans of beverages, oils and liquids — the clamp gripper adapts to round and square containers.

Foodservice Distribution

Five-gallon syrup jugs, beverage concentrate buckets and bulk food containers — hygienic stainless contact surfaces.

Chemical & Lubricant Drums

Industrial drums and pails — the clamp handles rigid drums safely, reducing manual handling of heavy, spill-prone containers.

Load compatibility: Round and square jugs, drums and jerry cans up to roughly 25L / 25kg. Not intended for flat cartons or soft bags — use our carton or bag palletizers for those.

How the Bottled Water & Drum Palletizer Works

The jug’s weight and shape demand a gentle, controlled clamp cycle. The process runs automatically once the pallet is loaded:

  1. Filled jugs arrive on the stainless conveyor. Jugs come off the bottling line and are separated by a pitch-control device so each jug reaches the pick station one at a time.
  2. Jug stops and is squared. A stop gate and side guides position the jug squarely under the clamp, so the gripper closes on the center of the body.
  3. Mechanical clamp closes and lifts. Two opposing food-grade pads close around the jug body, a pressure sensor confirms a secure grip, and the lift carriage raises the jug clear of the conveyor.
  4. Jug placed in the 4×4 / 3×3 pattern. The carriage moves over the pallet and lowers the jug into the next position. The HMI advances the pattern, counting rows and layers.
  5. Layer complete — slip sheet (optional), next layer. When a layer is finished, an optional inserter drops a cardboard or plastic sheet; the carriage descends to the new layer height and continues. Full pallets are rolled out for stretch wrapping.

Is This the Right Palletizer for You?

This dedicated water/drum cell is the right fit if your operation matches all four of the following. If you fall outside any of them, our team can recommend a different SunAura model:

  1. You palletize 5-gallon jugs or similar drums/jerry cans: The mechanical clamp is optimized for round/square rigid jugs and drums. If you run flat cardboard cartons, a vacuum-gripper carton or layer palletizer is the correct tool.
  2. Throughput around 400–600 jugs/hour: The cell matches standard bottling-line output. If you need well over 600 jugs/hour, we can configure a dual-station or double-clamp variant; if you are well below that, a simpler robotic cell may suffice.
  3. Hygiene matters: Stainless steel contact parts and washdown-friendly construction suit bottled-water and food beverage environments. Heavier, dusty chemical or cement bags need our heavy-duty bag range instead.
  4. You can supply a standard pallet and 3-phase power: The cell is built around a defined pallet size (usually 48×40 in or 1100×1100mm) and 380V 3-phase. Tell us your pallet dimensions and voltage and we configure accordingly.

Troubleshooting Guide — Common Issues & Solutions

Jug and drum palletizers face product-specific issues — wet surfaces, curved bodies, and tall, tippy loads. Below are the most common problems we diagnose remotely. Always lock out power before working in the cell.

ProblemPossible CausesSolutions
Jug slips or drops from the clampClamp pressure too low; jug body wet/slippery; contact pads worn; jug mis-centered under gripper.
  • Increase clamp closing pressure within the safe range set for your jug material.
  • Dry jug bodies before the pick station; add a blow-off if water film is excessive.
  • Replace worn or hardened food-grade contact pads.
  • Re-adjust the side guides and stop gate so each jug centers under the clamp.
Jugs crack or deform during clampingClamp pressure too high; pads hard/flat on curved body; closing speed too fast.
  • Reduce clamp closing pressure to the minimum that still holds the jug securely.
  • Use contoured, soft food-grade pads that match the jug body curve.
  • Slow the clamp close/open speed to avoid impact on thin-walled jugs.
Pallet stack leans or topplesPattern offset off; layer height wrong; no slip sheets; jugs placed off-square.
  • Re-teach the first-layer height and layer increment on an empty pallet.
  • Enable the layer slip-sheet inserter to stabilize tall stacks.
  • Verify each jug is placed square within the 4×4 / 3×3 grid before releasing.
Jugs jam on the infeed conveyorJugs overlapping or double-fed; stop gate timing off; conveyor speed mismatch; jugs tilted.
  • Adjust the pitch separator so jugs reach the stop one at a time.
  • Sync infeed conveyor speed with the pick cycle so jugs do not collide.
  • Clear jammed jugs and check upstream rinsing/filling for tilted jugs.
Slip sheet / layer separator not insertedSheet stack empty; inserter sensor not detecting sheet; jammed sheet in the feeder.
  • Reload the cardboard/plastic sheet magazine and confirm the feed path.
  • Clean the sheet-present sensor and re-set its height.
  • Clear any jammed sheet from the inserter rollers before restarting.
Throughput below rated 600 jugs/hourCycle speed set low; jugs queuing upstream; frequent pattern retries; maintenance not done.
  • Increase carriage speed in the HMI within safe limits for your jug.
  • Balance the bottling line output so jugs do not back up at the pick station.
  • Check lubrication and wear on lift chains/belts; replace worn parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why a mechanical clamp instead of a vacuum gripper for water jugs?

A 5-gallon jug has a curved, often wet or condensation-covered body that gives a vacuum cup very little reliable surface to seal on, and the rigid neck/handle makes overhead vacuum pickup awkward. The opposing mechanical clamp cradles the jug body and holds it firmly regardless of surface moisture — this is the standard, proven approach in the bottled-water industry.

How many 5-gallon jugs per hour can it palletize?

Rated throughput is up to 600 jugs per hour. Actual output depends on jug size, pallet height, and whether a slip sheet is inserted between layers — slip sheets add a few seconds per layer. We tune the cycle on your actual jugs and pallet before shipment and send video proof.

Can it handle drums or jerry cans as well as water jugs?

Yes. The clamping platform is designed to adapt to round drums and square jerry cans of similar size and weight — common for beverages, cooking oils, lubricants and industrial liquids. Tell us the exact dimensions and shape and we specify the correct contoured clamp pads.

Do the product-contact parts meet bottled-water hygiene requirements?

Yes. Conveyor surfaces, guide rails and clamp contact pads are stainless steel or food-grade material, with a smooth, washable design. We can provide the material documentation needed for your bottled-water operation’s hygiene file.

What is the warranty and lead time?

Every unit carries a 12-month warranty covering parts and labor, plus lifetime technical support by email and WhatsApp. Standard bottled-water cells ship in 30–45 days; custom drum adaptations and conveyor integration take 45–60 days. Each machine runs a 48-hour continuous test and ships with CE documentation.
