RADIAL DRUM WRAPPER

Radial Drum Wrapping Machine

Model: PW-RD2000

Cylindrical radial drum wrapping machine for paper rolls, steel coils, wire reels and cylindrical products. Wraps Ø500-2000mm diameter, 400-3000mm width, 25-40 pieces/hour. 2000kg capacity, 0-12rpm rotary table, pit-mountable design.

Overview

The PW-RD2000 is our cylindrical radial drum wrapping machine, purpose-built for wrapping cylindrical products such as paper rolls, steel coils, wire reels, textile rolls and other round items that cannot be effectively wrapped on a standard turntable pallet wrapper. The radial wrapping pattern applies stretch film around the circumference and across the end faces of cylindrical loads.

Accommodates cylindrical products from Ø500-2000mm in diameter and 400-3000mm in width, with a throughput of 25-40 pieces per hour. The rotary table rotates at 0-12rpm with variable frequency control, and the table height of 500-1000mm can be pit-mounted (recessed into the floor) for easy loading of heavy rolls by crane or forklift. Maximum load capacity is 2000kg.

The radial wrapping pattern provides complete coverage of both the cylindrical surface and the end faces, protecting products from dust, moisture and damage during storage and transport. Ideal for paper mills, steel service centers, wire manufacturers and textile producers. CE certified, with optional V-shaped roller supports, extended width and custom configurations available.

Understanding the Wrapping Process

Step-by-step operation for consistent results.

1

Load Drum onto Conveyor

Place the drum (or multiple drums on a pallet) onto the infeed conveyor. The system automatically centers the drum for radial wrapping. Standard capacity handles drums from 200L to 1000L, with custom sizes available.

2

Drum Enters Wrapping Chamber

The conveyor transports the drum into the radial wrapping chamber. Photo-eye sensors detect the drum dimensions and automatically adjust the wrapping ring diameter and film tension. No manual adjustment needed for different drum sizes.

3

Radial Ring Positions Around Drum

The radial wrapping ring positions around the circumference of the drum. Unlike orbital wrappers, the radial ring wraps the drum horizontally around its circumference, providing excellent load stability for cylindrical products.

4

Radial Wrapping Cycle

The radial ring rotates around the drum, applying stretch film in a spiral pattern from bottom to top. The film carriage moves vertically while the ring rotates, creating a consistent, overlapping wrap pattern. Film tension is precisely controlled to prevent drum deformation.

5

Film Cut & Drum Exits

Once the wrapping program completes, the film is automatically cut and clamped. The radial ring returns to home position. The conveyor discharges the wrapped drum to the outfeed station. The system is immediately ready for the next drum, achieving 20-40 drums/hour throughput.

How to Choose the Right Radial Drum Wrapping Machine

Key factors for your specific operation.

FactorRecommendation
Drum Size RangeStandard 200L-1000L drums. Custom sizes available for smaller or larger containers. Verify your drum dimensions before ordering.
ThroughputRated 20-40 drums/hour depending on drum size and wrapping program. For higher volumes, consider multiple machines or conveyor automation.
Load TypeDesigned for cylindrical drums and barrels. For rectangular loads, standard pallet wrappers are more suitable. Can wrap single drums or drums on pallets.
Film TypeUses 500mm wide machine-grade stretch film (17-25 micron). Pre-stretch ratio up to 200%. Film consumption approximately 30-50g per drum.
Automation LevelSemi-automatic standard (manual loading, automatic wrapping). Fully automatic conveyor-fed version available for inline production.
Floor SpaceFootprint approximately 3000×2500mm including conveyor. Requires adequate ceiling height of 3000mm minimum for radial ring movement.

Expert Selection Tips

  • Radial wrappers are specifically designed for cylindrical loads — not suitable for rectangular pallets
  • Measure your exact drum dimensions including any protrusions (bungs, handles) before ordering
  • For hazardous material drums, ensure wrapping does not obscure labeling required for transport
  • Consider adding label protection film for drums with important identification labels
  • Radial wrapping provides superior load stability for drums compared to standard pallet wrapping
  • Request factory test with your actual drums to verify wrapping quality and film consumption

Common Troubleshooting

Symptom: Radial ring does not rotate

Cause: Drive motor overload, VFD fault, drive belt broken, or safety guard interlock triggered.

Solution: Check VFD display for error code. Reset motor overload. Inspect drive belt. Verify all safety guards closed. Check ring bearing for seizure. Contact support if VFD error persists.

Symptom: Film breaks during wrapping

Cause: Film tension too high, film quality poor, pre-stretch ratio too high, or sharp edges on drum.

Solution: Reduce film tension setting. Verify film is machine-grade 17-25 micron. Lower pre-stretch ratio. Check drum for sharp edges or burrs. Verify film roll feeds freely. Check film carriage alignment.

Symptom: Drum not centered in wrapping chamber

Cause: Centering mechanism faulty, conveyor misaligned, or sensor calibration off.

Solution: Check centering mechanism operation. Verify conveyor alignment. Calibrate photo-eye sensors. Check drum guide rails for proper positioning. Clean sensor lenses. Adjust centering parameters in PLC.

Symptom: Wrapped drum has loose film

Cause: Insufficient wrapping tension, too few overlap revolutions, or film not properly pre-stretched.

Solution: Increase film tension setting. Add 1-2 extra overlap revolutions. Verify pre-stretch carriage functioning. Check film roll loaded properly. Ensure drum is properly centered. Verify radial ring speed consistent.

Common Questions

How long does it take to install and set up the PW-RD2000?
The PW-RD2000 ships fully assembled and tested. Installation typically takes 4-8 hours for your maintenance team — simply position the machine, connect power, load the film roll, and run test cycles. We provide detailed installation manuals, wiring diagrams and video support. Optional on-site installation by our engineers is available, including operator training (typically 1 day).
What type of packaging film does this machine use?
The PW-RD2000 uses standard machine-grade stretch wrap (17-25 micron thickness). The pre-stretch carriage stretches film up to 250%, significantly reducing film consumption compared to hand wrapping. Both cast and blown film types work well. We can supply film with your machine order, or you can source locally — any standard machine stretch wrap is compatible.
Can this machine handle non-standard product sizes?
The standard PW-RD2000 handles the product size range listed in the specifications above. For larger or non-standard products, we offer customized configurations with extended wrap dimensions, larger rotary tables/rings, and heavier-duty construction. Send us your product dimensions and we’ll recommend the right model or custom configuration.
What is the typical film consumption per unit?
Film consumption depends on product size, wrap height, number of wrap revolutions, film thickness and pre-stretch setting. With 250% pre-stretch, expect approximately 60-120 grams of 20-micron stretch film per standard pallet or unit. Compared to hand wrapping, the PW-RD2000 reduces film cost by 40-60% while improving load consistency.
Do you offer training for our operators?
Yes. With optional on-site installation, our engineer provides comprehensive operator training covering: machine operation, film loading, wrap cycle programming, routine maintenance, safety procedures, and troubleshooting. Training typically takes 4-6 hours and includes hands-on practice with your actual products. We also provide printed operation manuals and video tutorials. For self-installation, we offer free remote video training sessions via WhatsApp or Zoom.
